- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kumba Diallo -- The good ones and the bad ones are unmistakably and consistently ... : It's a classic so it does not need to be advertised I would say. It's entertaining and it gallops on until the end. Full of subtle or less subtle remarks on human nature and on human types, of course. There are the well known literary gimmicks of sudden changes of perspective and the chivalrous atmosphere of the gallant heroes. The good ones and the bad ones are unmistakably and consistently identified, which is lucky! Unfortunately, very different in real life! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andrew Shinn -- A Bible of Humanism and Manliness : I was motivated to learn French simply to read this book in its original language. In addition to being a great adventure tale, full of bravado and espionage, Dumas has beautiful turns of phrase. But most importantly, these books hold a Romantic worldview that is sorely lacking in today's world, where the truly heroic and the truly individual are shied away from for fear of embarrassment. This book is funny, intriguing and bitter at the same time. It'll have you skimming through the lines to know what comes next, laughing at times, and feeling quite sad at others. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brian C -- A classic! : I read this book years ago from the library and have revisited it several times since: this kindle version is just so I have it available wherever I go. The story is the one you'll expect, the political skirmishing between the King and Cardinal Richelieu and the affaire between the Queen and the Duke of Buckingham provide the impetus for a series of swashbuckling adventures for the four heroes. But it's the language and the pace of storytelling that's the real joy of this book. Dumas manages to tell the tale while seemingly letting the reader into his confidence, adding little asides which express his opinion of the events unfolding and invite you to consider the situation from a less fraught and emotional point of view than that enjoyed by the characters. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Henk Beentje -- Old-fashioned, timeless, classic : In the year 1625 a young man of 18 from the boondocks, Gascony, comes to Paris; armed with a sword, mounted on an aged horse, and with a burning desire to enter into that elite corps: the King's musketeers. Not an easy desire to fulfil, as the corps is very popular, and already manned to the full. Nevertheless, he manages to challenge the three most famous musketeers (Athos, Porthos and Aramis) to a duel, being young and foolish; and how that ends, plus French politics (the cardinal versus the King), plus international politics (Buckingham and the Queen) plus evil spies (Milady)... read it yourself. I have been re-reading this book and its successor (Vingt ans apres) many times. It is always a pleasure. The language is a bit archaic, the style a bit stilted, but this is a book I will keep re-reading, and enjoying, for many more years! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 18, 2012 )
